9 Must Read Personal Growth Books

Are you an avid reader? Are you a big consumer of intentional living writing?

Back in 2013, I read one of my first "personal growth" or "intentional living" books and I was a little more than hooked. Up until that point, John Grisham, James Patterson, and Ken Follett consumed my downtime with their suspense or historical fiction writing. I was always a reader, but it was reserved for entertainment only. From the last ten years of almost strictly reading personal growth books, I compiled a list of books you need to read based on your Enneagram type. (And yes I realize how incredibly bossy I sound right now- read it as passion).

  • If you are a Type 1 read: Crash the Chatterbox by Steven Furtick. As a type 1, your inner critic is the loudest of all types. Furtick helps you silence the insecurities that are screaming at you with this incredible book!

  • If you are a Type 2 read: Chase the Lion by Mark Batterson. "Stop living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death." is easily one of my most favorite quotes of all time straight from this book! You often forget that you have a call to run in your gifts because you are so busy helping others. This book will remind you of your gifts as a 2 and encourage you to walk in them!

  • If you are a Type 3 read: Nothing to Prove by Jennie Allen. At some point, as a type 3, you based your value on your achievements and accolades and Allen will remind you that YOU are loved for being exactly who you are. And that others need you to show up that way.

  • If you are a Type 4 read: Atomic Habits by James Clear. Guess what happens when you get a wildly creative person to create a system? Magic, innovation, genius. That's what this book will be for you when you harness the power of systematic habits.

  • If you are a Type 5 read: The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. You are in the head triad, meaning you think then act. When you apply this logic (with the high side and energy of the type 8) that Robbins shares in her book, watch out world.

  • If you are a Type 6 read: All In by Mark Batterson. There is no second guessing in this book. It's incredibly bold and helps you remember to get out of your own way.

  • If you are a Type 7 read: The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. As a 7 myself this book changed me, rocked my world, and plotted an entirely new course I didn't know I needed to follow. Read it.

  • If you are at Type 8 read: H3 Leadership by Brad Lomenick. Be humble. Stay Hungry. Always Hustle. (the subtitle) Need I say more? *One of my all time favorite reads.

  • If you are a Type 9 read: Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend. The teaching of boundaries in this book is kind but clear, exactly what you will need to hear. Spoiler alert - the authors will provide you with loads of examples so when you set boundaries you have a framework for how it should look.

If you've read the book I've suggested for your Enneagram number, pick a book from your stress or unhealth type to read. If you've read both, comment below with recommendations of the books you've read that you feel suit your number well so I can share!
